Should the city landmark its hand-painted signs?

There's no mechanism to protect a hand-painted storefront sign. When the shop changes hands, the sign goes — decades of a sign-painter's craft, gone in an afternoon.

I think the community archive could be step one: photograph and catalogue every one we can find. But should we push for something official? Curious what the historians and designers here think.
